Architectural shingle roofs for Charlotte homes
Asphalt shingles cover most houses between Gastonia and Monroe, and for good reason: they're affordable, they handle Piedmont weather, and they suit almost any style.

Nearly every new shingle roof we install is architectural (also called dimensional or laminated) rather than the old flat three-tab style. Architectural shingles are two layers bonded together, so they're heavier, they hold up better to wind, and the shadow lines give the roof depth that suits a craftsman bungalow in Dilworth as well as a two-story colonial in Ballantyne. Three-tab shingles still turn up on repairs to older ranches, and we can match them where a product line still exists.
How shingles are installed matters more than which brand is on the bundle. Each one needs its nails in the manufacturer's nailing zone, not high and not low, with the right count per shingle. The first course sits on a proper starter strip so the edge doesn't lift in a gust. Valleys are either closed-cut or woven to the maker's instructions, over ice-and-water membrane. Ridges get ridge cap shingles, not cut-up field shingles, and most roofs get a continuous ridge vent paired with clear soffit vents underneath so heat escapes the attic.
Color is the other big decision. Darker shingles look sharp on red brick but run hotter in a Charlotte August; lighter grays and weathered-wood blends stay a little cooler. We'll bring real sample boards to the house, because the swatch on a screen never matches the roof in afternoon sun. If you're in an HOA or a historic district, check its color rules before you commit.
Shingles also need the rest of the roof to cooperate. If your attic has no soffit intake, if the gutters are pulling off the fascia, or if a chimney needs a cricket to shed water, we include those in the conversation so the new shingles get their full service life.

On the job

Shingle roofing: common questions
Are architectural shingles worth it over three-tab?
In nearly every case. They cost a little more, hold up better to wind, last longer and look better. Many makers have stopped producing three-tab lines altogether.
What color shingle is best in Charlotte?
The one that suits your house and your HOA. Darker colors absorb more heat, lighter ones a little less, and good attic ventilation matters more than either.
How much wind can architectural shingles take?
It depends on the product and on correct installation. Each product line carries its own rating; proper nailing and a sealed starter course are what let a roof reach it.
Can you match my existing shingles for a repair?
Often closely, sometimes exactly. Color lines change over the years, so a patch on an older roof may look slightly different until it weathers.
Do I need new gutters with a new shingle roof?
Not always. If your gutters are sound and pitched right, they stay. We do replace drip edge, which sits behind the gutter.
What about algae streaks?
Many shingle lines include algae-resistant granules. Streaks are cosmetic, but they're a common complaint under shady oaks and pines, so it's worth choosing an algae-resistant product.
